The Illusion of Protection Of Whistleblowers in Medical Research: Lessons Learned Over Three Decades
1:30-2pm Eastern
Nancy F. Olivieri, MD, MA, MFA, FRCP(C) is a physician, researcher, and Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine and Public Health Sciences, University of Toronto. In 1996, she raised concerns about the safety of a drug she was testing in two publicly-funded clinical trials at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children. This triggered backlash and lawsuits from individuals, institutions and from the drug company (Apotex) and sparked a still-ongoing 30-year conflict focused on research integrity, the protection of patients in trials and the influence of the pharmaceutical industry in research. Dr. Olivieri successfully challenged several institutions, regulatory agencies, and Apotex CEO Barry Sherman with whom a mediated settlement concluded in late 2014, 18 years after Sherman issued his first threats against Dr. Olivieri, and three years before Sherman met an untimely violent death.
Canada’s Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons ruled Dr. Olivieri’s advocacy for vulnerable patients “commendable”. She was publicly honoured including by The Nader Foundation, the Canadian Association of University Teachers, Drug Safety Canada, and several honorary degrees. The American Association for the Advancement of Science presented Dr. Olivieri with its 2009 Award for Scientific Freedom and Responsibility “for indefatigable determination that patient safety and research integrity come before institutional and commercial interests.” In 2023, Dr. Olivieri received The John Maddox Prize which honours the rare individual who “courageously advances public discussion around difficult topics despite challenges or hostility.” Dr. Olivieri is a member of the Board of the Academic Parity Movement, a non-profit organization born out of a need for the protection of basic human rights within academic institutions (https://paritymovement.org/) Dr. Olivieri is completing her book, Blood Money outlining the conflicts and a mini-series, also titled Blood Money, is now in pre-production.
As the keynote speaker for the 14th Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Association of Postdoctoral Scholars, Dr. Olivieri will share her story and her advice for current researchers and scholars who also seek to protect academic freedom and scientific integrity, and build safer workplaces for all.
